Beta vs Glossy BioThane

BioThane® strap comes in two coatings / finishes. Both have the same strong, web interior.

  • BioThane Beta looks and feels like Leather. Has a textured matte finish, like leather. It is used to create the traditional leather look in Western or English riding tack.
  • BioThane Glossy is smoother and is shiny. It’s thinner and lighter weight is popular with Endurance Riders, Racers and others. It also has a little more abrasion resistance. Some BioThane Glossy is Opaque, Some is Translucent and some is Translucent with a reflective strip. Its slick surface is not appropriate for the grip portion in your reins.
BioThane Beta and BioThane Glossy finishes come in many colors. Our Tack comes in a solid color of your choice; two-tone tack for a little “flash;” or, just to add a nice accent color to Browbands, Breast Collars & accessories. Our main designer uses the leather-like Beta with the Glossy accents frequently as you'll see in our photography. The Glossy & Beta can be mixed and matched together as you wish.

Color Match
If the BioThane colors are named the same, they are the same color.
Examples:
  • Violet Beta & Violet Glossy are the same color.
  • Red Beta and Glossy Candy Red are clashing reds. Not at all the same hue or complimentary

A word about Color Transfer - The brighter the Glossy color is, the higher the risk that the color can transfer or bleed. Example: The Glossy Neon Yellow bled at the edges when sewn onto a Turquoise layer of a browband. The bright color can also "jump" onto lighter colors if stored together. Usually it's faint & mild. Frankly, the result can be kinda cool like tie-die. This is a known, unpreventable risk to appearance only & does not impact the product's performance. Therefore, Color Transfer is not covered by our Lifetime Warranty.
Author's Note: I'm told that "Color Transfer" is a common industrial manufacturing term used about color pigments in Polymers. However, it was new to this Tack Girl and might be to many of you too.

BioThane®
Sometimes just called Beta or Bio or Gold or Glossy - it is the completely maintenance-free coated webbing strap we use to make our Horse Tack. The BioThane Beta feels and looks like leather but simply out performs leather in every way. This is why the Amish have been using it for their hardworking horse tack almost exclusively since 1977 when it was first put on the market. BioThane was invented, developed and is still manufactured in the USA.

Today, the same BioThane Beta and Glossy Gold series strap used in our Equine Tack is used by human athletes too. The protective pads used by every Professional & College Football player use BioThane strap. Snow shoes worn in climbs up Mt. Everest use BioThane straps instead of leather. BioThane is even used by NASA in outer space and by our Military. Because of its antimicrobial properties, it’s a preferred strapping material for gurneys in the Medical field, in Hospitals and by Emergency Medical Techs. Next time you see a construction worker doing high work, wearing a safety harness, chances are that harness relies on BioThane® straps. You can trust BioThane's materials when riding your Equine Athlete.

A few of BioThane’s Performance Advantages over Leather Horse Tack:

  • Wash 'n Wear - Dunk it in a bucket of soapy water or just hose it off. It’s that easy to clean.
  • Maintenance Free - No conditioners, oils or leather potions are ever required. BioThane will not dry out or crack.
  • Antimicrobial – Sweat, blood, germs, other gross stuff and their odor is not absorbed.
  • Strong –All BioThane is stronger than leather, and we go one step further—we use the “Super Heavy” Equine strength BioThane. The heaviest duty that is appropriate for horseback riding tack. Yet, it’s still 20% lighter in weight than leather.
  • Weatherproof – It does not get stiff in the cold, or gooey in warm weather. Not every horseback ride is on a sunny 70 degree day.
  • Waterproof – Cross a river, or get caught in the rain with one less concern. We heat seal every hole to assure our finished product remains waterproof.
  • Care Free – It will not Mold or Mildew. Go ahead; keep it in your horse trailer or barn year round. It’s even resistant to many chemicals (think Fly Spray & Medicines).

Who makes BioThane Tack?
SpecTACKular does. Right here in the USA! Just like leather horse tack manufacturers, who buy leather, then sew & assemble it to create their company's product. We create our own exclusive, original ideas and design patterns for every piece of the horse tack that we manufacturer and sell. We have chosen to use BioThane Beta strapping instead of leather to make our products. It's the best material for the job.

We are not a reseller. We do not copycat. Years of thought, experience, trial and error go into each tack pattern by real horseback riders. Every new tack design pattern is field tested by horseback riders on horses until the tack pattern is perfected and ready to be Made for You and your horse by SpecTACKular craftsmen.

You can purchase BioThane Beta tack elsewhere, but you cannot purchase the quality of SpecTACKular Tack anywhere else!

How to add Adjustment Holes & Cut Excess Strap

We would love to provide you a perfect fit "right out of the box." The truth is, however, that your horse is a unique animal, and a perfect fit usually requires a few tweaks and adjustments. The good news is that adjusting our tack for the best fit is easy to do.

The strapping can be cut to remove excess with a pair of sharp scissors. We like an “English Point” at the end of our strapping for a clean look. Be sure to leave the strapping long enough to extend at least ¾ inch beyond the keeper or 1” past the Conway Buckle metal pin hole.

If a hole is needed where it is not provided, a simple leather punch will do the job. Take care to center the hole on the strapping, and make a hole just large enough for the buckle tongue or Conway Buckle Metal Pin to slide through tightly. A hole too small is better than too big. Tip - For a professional look, measure between the holes for even placement.

Measure twice, cut or punch once. Hopefully you understand that we cannot exchange or refund items once you have added holes or cut.

How to add Adjustment to our BioThane Beta Horse Tack

If you ever need to add adjustment & tidy-up our horse tack, it’s easy to do.

The strapping can be cut to remove excess with a pair of sharp scissors. We like an “English Point” at the end of our strapping for a clean look. Be sure to leave the strapping long enough to extend at least ¾ inch beyond the keeper.

If a hole is needed where it is not provided, a simple leather punch will do the job. We would also recommend you measure between the holes for a professional looking appearance.

Please measure twice, cut once as the old saying goes.
How to Clean BioThane Horse Tack

Cleaning our gear is so simple, a caveman could do it. Just take a bucket of water--warm or cold; adding a bit of dish soap, or mild detergent is optional; swish your gear around in the water; and, the tack cleans up like new. Unlike leather, our strapping actually likes water, and since all our fittings are stainless steel, you’ll have no rusting or tarnish.

Another option is to put your SpecTACKular horse tack in the top rack of the dishwasher, secure snaps, add soap and run full cycle.

Pro Tip: If your light colored BioThane Beta tack needs a scuff mark removed, try a MagicEraser Microscrubber

How to Conquer the Conway Buckle
We’ll admit a Conway buckle is possibly the most cursed piece of hardware used on horse tack.

Why have we chosen to use it? Simple – It reduces bulk
The Conway allows the use of only two pieces of strap versus the three or four required for other types of buckles. This adds to the comfort of your horse & decreases weight.

The bright spot - In most cases, once you survive the initial "move in", you’ll rarely interact with the Conway buckles again. Whew!

Here is our Conway Buckle Survival Guide

  1. Scootch” - top strap through Conway Buckle and past the keeper
  2. Exaggerate – Pull the top strap way up creating a much larger “Loop” then actually needed for adjustment.
  3. Adjust the bottom strap first. Move Bottom strap into the next hole desired (or mark for punching a new one) & Secure over metal Pin. The Bottom or underneath strap goes first for best appearance, easiest adjustment and safety
  4. Adjust the Top Strap. Now line up the exaggerated top strap and secure onto the metal pin & desired adjustment hole
  5. Move the keeper to secure any slack in appearance

Note - The folded, bottom strap always should be the first onto the Conway Buckle’s metal pin, and then the top strap (outside) should follow. This is for safety

How to Initially adjust our Breast Collars

Initial Adjustment Tips for Breast Collars, including Pulling Collars for Trail Riding

A Breast Collar for trail riding has only one j-o-b. If you are trail riding up a steep incline and your saddle slips back, it should engage and prevent the saddle (and you) from slipping off. Otherwise, a breast collar should lightly float, resting above the shoulder blades. When your horse walks on flat ground, it should not be pulling or tugging or under tension. More like a necklace than a tightened belt.

The Pulling Collar is adjusted differently. These are designed for narrow withered horses and mules. They are designed to stay in light, constant contact with the animal's body at a narrower upright angle. From the Breast Ring Center to the saddle's pommel, the Shoulder Strap should have contact yet move with the shoulders. It should have give but not sloppy slack. Like a belt on a pair of jeans that fit.

The Western Breast Collar may need to be adjusted differently, if used for working cattle and roping.

Initial Adjustments Should Be Done In This Order:

Saddle On

  1. Let the saddle settle into the normal riding position

Breast Collar On

  1. Secure the Over-the-Mane Wither strap, if applicable.
  2. Snap the Saddle Connector straps on the breast collar into the Dee Rings on the sides of the saddle.
  3. Feed the Cinch Strap between the front legs and snap into the ring on the cinch (or the girth adapter)

Shoulders Strap Position / Angle

  1. Shoulder Straps should lay just above the shoulder blade at the same angle as the shoulder blade
  2. If the shoulder strap is pulled back & below the shoulder blade, let the saddle connector out.
  3. If the shoulder strap is flopped forward, tighten the saddle connector

Breast Ring & Shoulder Straps

  1. Check the Breast Ring. It should be at rest in the center of the breast. You should be able to fit about a fist behind the shoulder straps and breast collar ring
  2. At the shoulder strap buckle - you should tighten or loosen until you can fit about a fist behind the shoulder straps and breast collar ring. Do not over-tighten and alter the angle.

Breast Ring to Cinch Ring (Girth Ring)

  1. With the Breast Ring in the Center of the Breast, simply loosen or tighten this strap at the Conway buckle until about a fist of strap "dangle" is achieved
Note - It can be dangerous to leave this strap too long or to over tighten it. A horse in water etc. can get a leg caught. Cinch / Girth straps too tight will cause rubbing and the cinch to gall

Your Breast Collar should now be fit. Remember our Patterns, Materials & our comfortable Strategic Stitching allow an improved, athletic fit without rubbing or chaffing your horse's skin.

Time to Check & Test

  1. Is the Breast Collar adjusted to "do the j-o-b"? I like to simulate the saddle slipping back, with me safely on the ground. Loosen the cinch. Move the saddle back. Does the Breast Collar engage before the saddle has slipped too far back and into a danger zone? If not, re-adjust.
  2. Once everything is adjusted & secured, ride in a safe, controlled area and double check your tack. BioThane does not stretch, but it gives and flexes with your horse. It also flattens, shapes and has a temporary "memory". Like with any new Tack, a few times on your first ride in your new tack, plan to stop and check that all is adjusted and fitting as desired.
  3. Check your tack's fit frequently. Your horse's weight gains and losses over the riding season may require additional adjustments.

How to Initially Adjust our Bridles
Initial Adjustment Tips - Bridles & Halter Bridle Combos

You will love your new SpecTACKular Bridle. Please remember the initial adjustments and tweaks will require a little time and is better done when you’re not rushed. Here are some tips to help make the initial set up easy.

When doing the initial set-up for our Halter Bridles Combos, remember you are adjusting two pieces of tack--"Halter + Bridle"--to work in harmony on your horse. Each will need some adjustment to assure the perfect fit. In the rare case where excess strap needs to be cut, or additional adjustment holes punched, we recommend that you not cut strap or punch holes until you have ridden with the tack enough for the adjustments to "settle."

ADJUST THE HALTER FIRST! Make the adjustments in the following order:

  1. Throatlatch - Snug, about two fingers slack is all you want. "Scooch" that strap & Conway buckle to tighten. Do not worry about adjustment holes - yet
  2. Noseband - About 2-3 fingers slack
  3. Mark the Throatlatch & Noseband - If additional adjustment holes will be needed, don't punch them yet. Mark them with White Chalk, a grease pencil or Painters Tape to punch later.
  4. Poll Strap - Avoid tightening the poll strap behind the ears. Use one of the two holes. Do not add holes. FYI - This is also the pull-back break-away
  5. Browband - Snap it on

Lift the lead rope snap to remove the weight & pressure. Evaluate again. Is the throatlatch still snug or is it droopy? If its not snug, snug it some more.

Additional adjustment holes and securing everything into place will be done at the end, once all adjustments are completed.

Your Halter should now be fit. Remember our Patterns, Materials & our comfortable Strategic Stitching allow an improved, athletic fit without rubbing or chaffing your horse's skin.

THE BRIDLE WITH BIT IS NEXT!
  1. Bit & Curb - Attach your bit & curb straps to the ends of the Bit Hangers or Add-a-Bridle or Western Bridle. Attach your curb strap to the bit
  2. Bit up - Place the bit in the horse's mouth. Secure the bridle strap behind the ears as you normally do or snap the bit hangers into the elongated Dee rings
  3. Adjust the Straps to the bit
  • Cheek Buckles get adjusted first (Add-a-Bridle & Western Headstalls Only - )
  • Then adjust Conway Buckles at the bit. Notice the little 1/2" adjustment holes for ongoing little "nudge" adjustments. Underneath is tidier
  • Most believe that the horse should be "smiling" with one slight crease in the corners of the mouth. Too Long? Too Short? Mark, remove, and then adjust as needed.

Tips - Getting the bit detached and reattached can be intimidating for some. Here are a few tips you may find useful.
  • Before detaching the bit from your old bridle, take reference photos of: a) The way the bit attaches; and b) The "smile" in your horses mouth when properly bitted up
  • If you leave your bit attached to the old bridle while you attach the new bridle, it will be a good guide on approximate length adjustments that will be needed

Time to Check & Test
  1. Once everything is adjusted & secured, ride in a safe, controlled area and double check your tack. BioThane does not stretch, but it gives and flexes with your horse. It also flattens, shapes and has a temporary "memory." Like with any new Tack, on your first ride plan to stop and check a few times that all is adjusted and fitting as desired.
  2. Also, your horse may need a slight seasonal adjustment at the bit due to changes from winter to summer coats. Our adjustment holes at the bit are 1/2" apart for this very purpose.

How to Measure & Size Horse Tack
  How to Measure - Bridles

How to Measure - Breast Collars

It's important that your horse's tack fits. Horse Tack properly fit, and adjusted, keeps your horse comfortable and both of you safe. This is why, when we created our original product's patterns, we gave a great deal of thought to the athletic fit required.

We threw out old fashioned sizing terms like "Horse", "Cob / Arabian", "Average", "Gaited", "Large Horse" & "Draft". We took a different approach to designing our exclusive patterns to fit the modern physique of our trail, working and pleasure horses of today. We also took a play from the human clothing world - measure the body.

This led us to assign fresh new sizing names to our product patterns - terms like "Sleek" and "Standard". Yes, all sizes come with adjustability. In the Product Specs for each product you will find a section called Size-Wise. There you will find Size Charts and more product specific information.

We currently have three sizes available:
  • Sleek - Fits most Trail Horses - 14.3 hh to 15.3 hh
  • Standard - Fits larger, wider horses & Mules - 15.2 hh to 16.2 hh
  • Custom Sizes - Require the Horse to be measured. (It's easier than you think.)

How to measure for a Belt
We have observed that the leather belt makers measure without consistency- men's or women's. Some measure the entire belt and buckle, from end-to-end. Some the leather only. Some to the first adjustment hole. Some measure your waist size.

The point being, just because you normally wear a 40" leather belt, may or may not mean you wear a SpecTACKular size 40".

Measuring for a SpecTACKular Belt Size is simple.

  1. Lay your existing favorite belt flat
  2. Measure from the leather fold, to the favorite hole you buckle into. Don't include the buckle in the measurement.
  3. If the Fold to Hole is 40", order a SpecTACKular size 40"

Our Belts are made to fit through most Western denim blue jeans' belt loops. The width provided in our product specs description is the width of the BioThane Beta belt material. If your pants or jeans' belt loops are unusually wide or narrow, please measure the inside dimension of the belt loops.
How to measure for a Dog Collar
Measuring for a SpecTACKular Dog Collar is simple.

  1. Lay your dogs existing collar flat on a table or the floor
  2. Measure from the nylon or leather fold of material, to the adjustment hole you buckle into. No Buckle.
  3. If the Fold to Hole is 14", see the Size Chart for XS, S, M, L or XL Sizing

Made in America
SpecTACKular's horse tack has always been Made in America.

Western horse tack is America's horse tack, dating back to the Cowboys & the cattle drives of the Wild West. Western Horse Tack was born here, in the U.SA. SpecTACKular decided early, our production should stay here.

  • BioThane Glossy is smoother and is shiny. It’s thinner and lighter weight is popular with Endurance Riders, Racers and others.

Both BioThane Beta and BioThane Glossy finishes come in many colors. Our Tack comes in a solid color of your choice; two-tone tack for a little “flash;” or, just to add a nice accent color to Browbands, Breast Collars & accessories.

OUR TACK HARDWARE & FITTINGS - The Buckles, Snaps, Conchos, Loops, Snap, Rings, Screws, etc.

All of our hardware is made from high quality, non-ferrous Stainless Steel. Not a stainless steel finish or plating – our Hardware is Stainless Steel to the core. Stainless Steel is the only readily available metal that will stand up to the performance requirements of our Tack. It is strong; it's finish is not altered by sweat & washings. It does not peel, tarnish, rust or corrode, even after years of service. Stainless Steel hardware is the standard for Marine fasteners and it is the only hardware the Amish will use on their own Harness & Tack.

We have given a great deal of thought to the selection of each piece of hardware. Our snaps are strong and secure, but easily opened with one thumb. Thumb-Touch Snaps mean NO struggle or extra strength needed. Many of our customers have small hands or arthritic hands. Hassle free is the goal. Did we mention our LIFETIME WARRANTY includes every buckle and snap?

Most of our products are shown with and proudly feature the Horse Shoe Brand Hardware. Yes, its stainless steel too. We call this Western Embossed finish. Horse Shoe Brand is made by saddle maker and Western leather craftsmen, Jeremiah Watt. You’ll immediately notice the detailing in the finishes. The man certainly can make a utilitarian Conway Buckle look like Jewelry.

What you may not notice is the engineering and functional quality in each Jeremiah Watt piece. Buckles are engineered so that the straps lay flat. At the base of each buckle “tongue” are two raised grooves to prevent the tongue from flopping side-to-side. The welded metal loop on the back side of Horse Shoe Brand Bridle Loop Concho is thicker than normal. A Horse Shoe Brand Concho actually has a chance to survive, if your horse rubs on a tree. Metal artistry is applied throughout the Western Embossed Series Horse Shoe tack hardware that Jeremiah Watt designs.

On most tack we offer Polished Finish stainless steel hardware as an option. One of the nice features of the Polished Finish hardware is the Stainless Steel Roller Buckle. If a Tack fit adjustment is needed, the strap glides over that little roller. The roller buckle is small difference in look, but a noticeable difference in function. Handy if you adjust your horse's tack frequently. Durable and functional hardware is used throughout. All in Stainless Steel

OUR BLING - Covered by our LIFETIME WARRANTY
Metal Spots - Round shaped Spots & Diamond shaped Spots are Stainless Steel
Crystal Spots - Large or Small Crystal Spots are not available in stainless steel. However, they are still covered by our lifetime warranty
Decorative Conchos - Western Embossed by Jeremiah Watt Horse Shoe Brand to match our other tack hardware
